Vanessa Montaño

I grew up in the historical Texas town of San Antonio. I was made aware very early in life that I was able to to see and explore “ancient” architectural sites dating back to the 1500s, thanks to the stalwart commitment of architectural conservationists. Thanks to active preservation, the fine craftsmanship of long past artisans felt very much alive and current to my art sensibilities since I was a child. For a long while I sought out traditional trades and craft techniques such as paper making and glassblowing. But as I travelled and lived in places far far away from Texas my art practice pendulum Swung far and wide. And one day I realized that i had reached a place where my art practice consisted of conceptual art and had de materialized almost completely. Walking back from the edge of another extreme, I sought to bridge the joy from each practice to one another. Today I work in ways that provoke a multi sensory experience and honor nuance.
