Tour Stop #360

Kristy Battani

In the cracked patina of weathered paint, in the creases of well-thumbed book pages, in the tattered seams of a threadbare shirt, there lies a revealing truth about ourselves…what we have been in our daily lives, what we have ignored, what we want to become. In the ordinary, we expose our aspirations, even those ideals that have been lost, rejected or replaced.

Drawing inspiration from those exposed areas of daily life, Kristy Darnell Battani creates colorful two-dimensional and three-dimensional tapestries made from the pages of outdated textual materials and paint. Kristy collects paper materials that have a history, specifically those with a utilitarian purpose such as discarded manuals, diaries, textbooks, ledgers and advertisements.

Taking design cues from textile art, Kristy creates her pieces from many layers of print materials and paint, worn back through sanding to represent the passage of time, a process that is repeated again and again, intentionally highlighting the abstract patterns, texture and color that emerge from the process. Kristy’s work has been included in numerous corporate, university and private collections across the country. Kristy currently hosts the "ARTish Plunge" podcast available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
