Nia Olabesi

My name is Nia Olabesi. I am a self-taught, Austin-based, abstract mixed media artist originally from Washington, D.C. I’m an accomplished jazz singer and have performed extensively throughout the U.S. for over a decade with my former jazz band The Nia Olabesi Trio. The arts have always been my passion. I have always had the desire to create, and to express myself through song, dance and movement. Jazz music calls for improvisation, listening to hear and feel movement and respecting the silence of new ideas as they emerge, much like the explosion of color spilling out onto the canvas in real time. Music is my magic, my guide to self-expression while painting is revealing and releasing.
