Gregory Bastin
I started making abstract paintings with an unique approach I call controlled chance. In every piece I try to bring together in as vivid a way the most different and appealing elements with the maximum freedom. So I don’t plan or invent beforehand. The painting's many layers, strokes, and scrapes of color all came into existence by way of unpredictable occasions of pure chance over many sessions.
This style allowed me to do what I had never let myself do: put something down at random. And then, of course, I realized that it never can be fully random. You have to take action. People always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. It opened a new door that I had never considered before. If I didn't know what it was supposed to look like, in other words if he had no set goal, then randomness has to play an important role. It is an attempt to feed imagination. To communicate feelings I cannot put into words because if I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.
