Tour Stop #216

Meena Matai

I create vibrant and playful abstract art with intricate designs. My creative journey is as much spontaneous and playful, as it is meditative and introspective.

I grew up in India in a family of engineers and educators. Art has been the one constant in my life, even while I built my career in electrical engineering. My life is now a balance of being an artist, an engineer, a mother, an educator and a human being.

My ancestors lived in refugee camps forced upon them by the India-Pakistan partition. They had to build a new life, leaving behind everything to create something new forcibly. The current suffering and war in Ukraine reminds me of the struggles my ancestors faced. We, as humans, are more alike than we’re different. Our stories are similar. I hope to share our stories, find connections and build a supportive community via art. I hope that my vibrant colors inspire positivity, collaboration, and nurturing support. And it begins right at home. Just as colors come together to form beautiful art so do people to form a supportive community. It takes a village to raise a child or to bring about monumental change.
