John Powell
John is a professional designer and painter who was born and raised in Austin, TX. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from Texas State University in 2000 and his Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana Tech University in 2006. It was during his undergraduate studies that he was exposed to post-modern designers such as David Carson and the work of abstract artists such as Basquiat, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, and Cy Twombly. These influences culminated in his MFA work at Louisiana Tech where he designed and built books exploring deconstruction and fragmented narratives. John focused on his design career after receiving his MFA, but returned to painting several years ago. His mastery of design deeply informs his ability to create visual surfaces that truthfully bear witness to gripping human experiences which are difficult to fully articulate with language. His work was most recently exhibited in the 4 Elements show at the Van Der Plas Gallery in New York, NY, in the ArtsPSWT Show at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, NY, and is included in private collections nationwide.

Infamous hours away defiant in the growing night

The blasphemies come as second fire revealed

Fell skies fear the next amid the clearing

Withdrew to truth feeling suddenly forgotten, silent

But funerals flee the priceless days

Till not beyond spoke the broken cold passing
