FRAY: New Directions in Fiber Art
FRAY: New Directions in Fiber Art is a group exhibition by Central Texas artists working in various fine arts fiber media. As a group, we are navigating and transforming the archetypal images associated with fiber arts, which have traditionally been viewed as a women’s craft, and as such still struggle to be viewed as art or to be included in fine arts spaces. By forming a collective of fiber artists we are using these traditional media to create community and expand fiber arts out to political and societal realms. Our members use historical and ancient artforms to navigate modern themes and problems, finding new ways to explore traditional media within the context of a changing world. Within the context of fiber arts, we are exploring broader feminist issues such as gender identity, sexuality, inequality and environmentalism. In this exhibition, we examine fiber’s relationship to isolation and connectedness, two opposing poles that can define an individual’s experience and shape their identity.
Participating artists include: Abi Mallick, April Garcia, Catherine Hicks, Caitlin Young, Eris Tock, Jennifer Steverson, Jess Bee, and Jess Gritton.
